Mycoplasma

As most people with Chronic Lyme Disease are aware, it is much more than Borrelia burgdorferi that makes us ill.  Looking at just the infectious component of our illnesses (of which this is only one part), we are familiar with Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, viruses, and others.  However, it seems that Mycoplasma is one infection that is often overlooked in the evaluation and management of tick-borne illnesses.

In Dr. Garth Nicolson, PhD's work on Mycoplasma, it is estimated that up to 70% of those infected with Borrelia are co-infected with Mycoplasma and that the most common Mycoplasma seen in people with Lyme disease is Mycoplasma fermentans

In mid-2009, I had the opportunity to write an article with Dr. Nicolson on Mycoplasma and the implications of this organism on our health.
